Stefan V. compares Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite to 4001 Blue-Black

Many of us were shocked last year when the Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black was discontinued suddenly in the US due to chemical regulation changes. Since then, Pelikan has developed a new Edelstein color called Tanzanite, presumably meant to replace the missing blue-black ink. 


Stefan emailed me saying he had some 4001 Blue-Black and wanted to compare it to Tanzanite to see how suitable a replacement it really is. I sent him some samples of the ink and he wrote an incredibly thorough and comprehensive review/comparison of the two inks.

Long story short, the inks are pretty darn similar. Not exactly the same, but very similar. See how Stefan gets to this conclusion here. Thanks so much for all of the hard work, Stefan!

  1. Thanks to Stefan for this thorough review and to the Goulets for providing him with the materials. If the Pelikan Blue-Black that I stockpiled in my secret bunker ever runs out, Tanzanite will be on my list of alternatives. R&K Salix looks like another option.

  2. Stefan really deserves all the credit here, this is one of the more thorough reviews I've seen! Salix would probably be a good option too, as you're getting water resistance on top of it all :)
