This month's Ink Drop has been a torturous wait for some of you, and absolute joy for others. We sent out inks to over 300 people labeled anonymously, so you could all test them without brand bias for the chance to guess the colors and win free ink :)
We've kept you waiting long enough! Without further ado:
Easter Egg #1: J. Herbin Éclat de Saphir
Easter Egg #2: Diamine Marine
Easter Egg #3: Diamine Majestic Purple
Easter Egg #4: Noodler's Navajo Turquoise
Easter Egg #5: Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses
Contest Winners
We had a contest for members to guess the colors for a chance to win free ink. Everyone who correctly guessed each color was put into a random drawing for that color, with one winner selected to win a full bottle. And now, to announce those winners...
#1 J. Herbin Éclat de Saphir: ru32day
#2 Diamine Marine: Freddy
#3 Diamine Majestic Purple: Karen Langlie
#4 Noodler's Navajo Turquoise: Emily F.
#5 Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses: Nachodelamancha
Congratulations to all our winners! We'll be reaching out to you by email over the next day or two.
Contest Guesses
Many of you have been curious to know not just what the real colors are, but what everyone else guessed they were! Here is the percentage of those that guessed each color correctly:
#1 J. Herbin Éclat de Saphir: 10.4%
#2 Diamine Marine: 12.8%
#3 Diamine Majestic Purple: 14.9%
#4 Noodler's Navajo Turquoise: 16.7%
#5 Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses: 18.6%
What was interesting is that the actual colors weren't the most popularly selected colors for 3 of the inks! #1 Éclat was thought to be Noodler's Periwinkle, #2 Marine was thought to be Caran d'Ache Caribbean Sea (they are REALLY close colors), and #3 Majestic Purple was thought to be Diamine Imperial Purple. #4 Navajo Turquoise was closely followed by Pelikan Edelstein Topaz, and #5 BSER was followed closely by Noodler's Red-Black.
This was a really fun month, I hope you all enjoyed it. Next month we'll be back to telling you what the inks are on the vials, so you won't have to guess anymore ;) We'll be revealing May's Ink Drop theme next week! Thanks again everyone for making Ink Drop such a fun even, please share your experiences in the comments!

Holy cow! Well, at least I got one right. :) Black Swan in English Roses? Who'd'a thunk? Okay, 18.6% would'a thunk. Thanks so much, Brian and Rachel, for a very engaging Ink Drop!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! I'm actually surprised that BSER was the ink that the MOST people guessed correctly! I guess it's the one out of the bunch that has the fewest comparable colors...still! It was really fun and I hope everyone enjoys the reveal :)
ReplyDeleteWoot! I really like no 1 and am very happy to be the lucky winner of that colour :)
ReplyDeleteFantastic fun! Even though I guessed only two correctly, I was "in the pack" with the incorrect but nonetheless popular vote-getters. What a blast...Thanks, Goulets!
ReplyDeleteAre you SURE #2 wasn't Diamine Steel Blue???? Hahaha - I was so positive about that one - I was one of the ones who guessed in the more popularly selected colors group. This was a joyful, maddening but overall FUN ink drop! Thanks for the challenge - putting in my order for the Noodler's Navajo Turquoise today!
ReplyDeleteYou really are sure about #2 huh....
See you tonight @ Write Time
You know I really enjoyed this drop. It also included 3 colors I was considering trying out, but had pretty far down my list. Thanks to the drop I can take 2 of those off my "try more of this list". Which means more money for other ink! :) Thanks guys.
ReplyDeleteThere you go! I'm glad they were inks you wanted to try anyway :)
ReplyDeleteYup, #2 is absolutely not Steel Blue ;) Marine is reeeeally close though. It seems like Navajo Turquoise was the star of the show, I know there were a lot of comments about that color! I just hope we don't run out too quick :P
ReplyDeleteInk Drops are a perfect example of how one may never know they like an ink unless they try it out - there are some inks I would never have sampled and found out I liked (and vice versa) but having someone else choose them opens up a whole new view. I love the Ink Drop club.
ReplyDeleteWow Brian, you were fast with that reply to my order! Was I the first one to order the Navajo Turquoise? I really did go crazy for that color!
P.S. Congratulations to all the winners of the contest!
ReplyDeleteI thought for SURE #2 was Caribbean Sea... a color I've been lusting for for quite some time. I like it though, good to know that there's an alternative color out there for less $$. I was going back and forth on #3 for quite some time between Diamine Majestic Purple and PR Purple Mojo... at least I was in the right ballpark with that one since I had that in the top 2 as the color.
ReplyDeleteI only got one color right, Black Swan in English Roses. I was pretty convinced that it was Noodler's Red-Black at first. I had a lot of fun with this, I spent WAY too much time researching though! :)
#2 was one I would've bet money on was CdA, so what a surprise! Like ThirdeYe said, I'm glad there's a really great (...and less expensive) option for that color. It's so gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteBSER was one I went, "Man, I think it could be this! Oh wait, [looks at swabs and reviews] maybe it's more this color... or this..." Maybe I used too fine a nib to see any shading.
Thank you Brian and Rachel for doing this! It was really fun, if an agonizing wait. :)
Wow, I only got one right, #2 Diamine Marine, and I may be the winner (unless there is another Freddy). I cannot believe that I didn't get #5 because I have both a sample and a full bottle of it. However, when I dipped each Easter Egg, I used a broad italic nib (the Brause 3.0) and just made a short straight line and there was no shading, which is something I look for in the Black Swan series. All I saw was a brownish color that I never would have associated with English Roses. Just goes to show the depths of that color. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThis was a lot of fun and I have already labeled the Easter Eggs with the correct names. Thanks Brian and Rachel and congratulations to all of the winners.
Do you know if there is anybody who guessed all 5 correctly? If not, was there anybody with 4 correct guesses? 3?
ReplyDeleteHey I managed to get 1 right, J. Herbin Éclat de Saphir. Productivity plummeted this week, I may need to send Brian a bill for hours of research. :-)
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I got BSIER right was when I cleaned it out of my pen a drop hit the toilet paper I had for cleaning the nib and it made the poppy that Nathan showed in his video. Thanks Nathan!
ReplyDeleteI went with my second impression on #1 which was wrong,my first had been right and the same on #3 but with opposite results, second impression was right. It was interesting to see I made the most common wrong guesses on 2 of them.Overall,it was fun.
Thanks again Rachel and Brian.
It's also really fun also to see how different our perceptions of color are. Like Fred Reinstein in the comments, I didn't get any shading out of the BSER on the single attempt I made, and it led me astray; if you had told me it was a Noodler's Black Swan Ink I would have called it 'Dirty Brown Swan in Brown Dirt', hahaha.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for this fun contest. :)
This was one kickass and fun Ink Drop, even if I'm watching from the sidelines! Maybe you should do this every year in April.
ReplyDeleteHooray! I love purple and I'm so psyched I won that color!
ReplyDeleteI almost guessed Noodler's Red Black for the last one. But I have a bottle of that and when I swabbed some next to the sample, it was just not quite the same...so I figured it must be BSER.
Anyway, this was a really fun contest but I am glad the waiting is finally over ;)
I actually enjoyed the task of trying to figure out the inks, even if I did manage to get all 5 wrong
ReplyDeleteHurray! This was a blast for sure, maybe not every month but I'd totally be down to do this more often. Thanks for the BSIER!
ReplyDeleteThat worked out really well!
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, the most anyone guessed correctly was 3, so don't worry ;)
ReplyDeleteWell, you were pretty quick to the punch! ;) I'm glad you're loving the club, I know it's been a blast for us!
ReplyDeleteCaribbean Sea and Marine are sooooooo close in color, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart unless you compared them side-by-side for a while! Marine is a great color and one of my favorites, that's why I wanted to include it :)
ReplyDeleteWe're glad you enjoyed it :) I knew BSER would be a tough one, because it's such a relatively new ink. There aren't a lot of reviews of it out there yet. That's why we wanted to use it! We were being sneaky....but what's funny is that people guessed that one more accurately than all the others! Bravo everyone ;)
ReplyDeleteYup, you're 'Freddy' ;) Congrats!
ReplyDeleteNo one got 5 or even 4 right. We did have some get 3 right ;) They were apparently very tough!
ReplyDeleteHaha, oh no! Please don't do that, I'd hate to think about how much of a distraction we've been to everyone with this month's Drop! ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha, that's neat about the toilet paper! I'm glad you enjoyed it, it was fun for a lot of us!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Well, Black Swan inks are known for varying in color quite a bit based on the pen and paper used, so I thought this one would throw some people ;) I'm glad you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteHaha, we're pretty much taking things a month at a time right now, next year seems so far off! But I think it's definitely something we would revisit, it's been a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteCongrats! I think everyone is probably glad this month is over, even as fun as it's been! It was one of those torture/fun months, haha!
ReplyDeleteaww, no! That's okay, the journey is the reward!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked it! This would definitely be too much to manage for us every month, but it was fun this time :) You're welcome for the ink, congrats!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the marine is better behaved than the Caribbean sea. I love the colour, but the Caran d'Ache bleeds & feathers all over the place.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, unless you use it in a really broad pen the BSER is very, very similar to the Diamine Oxblood (my guess -_-).
ReplyDeleteCongrats to all the winners! :)
ReplyDeleteIf you like the color, try the Diamine Steel Blue (I swore I was right with that guess!) It is SOOO close to the Marine and is lovely both in writing & color.
ReplyDeletewow, I got every single one wrong! It was FUN though.
ReplyDeletecongrats to the winners! oh man, i missed all of them! ahhaha! mind you i only spent a few mins on my guesses. oh well, it was fun. just snagged a bottle of the navajo turq. that was my fav! thanks for the good time.
ReplyDeleteYou weren't the only one who missed them all ;) They were tough (that was kind of the point). Nav. Turquoise is an awesome color, that's my favorite of the bunch.
ReplyDeleteAww, haha! I'm glad it was fun for you :)
