Ink Nouveau #24: Fountain Pen 101

I've gotten several requests to do a video for the fountain pen novice. So, finally, here it is - Fountain Pen 101.

***To clarify from the video, Pelikan pens DO accept Standard Short International cartridges as well as their own proprietary cartridges.***

  1. Excellent! I just bought a fountain pen and converter and was wondering how I would get the ink into the converter once the cartridge that came with it finally ran out of ink.

    Thanks.

  2. I greatly prefer the converter. I use my fountain pens (almost all of them are Watermans) all the time and I've gotten accustomed to even making sure that I take a bottle of ink on travel (surface rather than air travel) with me. The cost and relative lack of ink choices when using cartridges make them less attractive to me.

  3. Great video! I'm looking forward to the more advanced lessons. ;) I use the converter as well. However, I take a bottle or two of ink with me even when travelling by plane. I make sure that the lid is on tightly, then I put the bottles in one zip-loc bag and then put that inside another zip-loc bag. I've never had a problem with leakage.

  4. "...That's just part of the sign of a good fountain pen afficionado, is someone who gets ink on their hands all the time." Truer words have never been spoken. Though, whenever I'm refilling something with Noodler's red-black (an absolutely beautiful color, but it looks like blood whenever it gets on your skin) I get some funny looks.

  5. I'm glad the video is so helpful!! I certainly plan to do more...FP 102, 103...give me some input what you'd like to see and I'll be sure to include that in more Fountain Pen basics videos.

  6. I'd like to see a video with commentary of different people and their process of finding the right pen for them. with the thousands of choices i could use some help.

is there a way to choose a pen online? it is not natural for me to buy something i haven't experienced yet. any pointers?
